Using Drones and AI to Combat Drought and Food Shortage in Lesotho

Lesotho is facing an alarming drought that’s crippling its agriculture and pushing families into hunger. In Butha-Buthe, farmers are battling with barren fields and failed crops. But there’s hope on the horizon with advancements in drone technology, powered by artificial intelligence (AI).

Drones, when equipped with AI, are becoming a game-changer for farming in Lesotho. They can survey large areas, monitor crop health, and help farmers detect early signs of disease or pests. This data allows farmers to take targeted actions—whether it’s applying just the right amount of fertilizer or pesticide, or determining which crops need urgent attention. Precision agriculture like this reduces costs, conserves resources, and minimizes environmental damage.

Take the eBEE X drone as an example, showcased at the recent Farmers Expo at Masianokeng by ReNOKA. This AI-powered drone can fly over fields, capturing detailed images that help farmers make better decisions. With this technology, farmers in Lesotho can combat food insecurity more effectively, even in times of extreme drought.

The impact doesn’t stop there. The potential for drones extends beyond farming. By gathering climate data and forecasting weather patterns, drones can assist in broader efforts to mitigate the effects of climate change in the region.

Looking Ahead: A Smarter Future for Lesotho’s Agriculture

Although Lesotho’s journey toward fully integrated drone and AI technology is still in its early stages, steps like expanding broadband access and supporting tech-driven farming solutions are crucial. Education and healthcare could also benefit from the smart city model, with digital classrooms and telemedicine offering solutions to remote areas.

The road ahead may be challenging, but the potential for drones and AI to transform agriculture—and even the country as a whole—is undeniable.
